Like jerky, but better.

Unlike most jerky, we naturally preserve our bars just as our ancestors did with no added nitrates or nitrites (carcinogenic preservatives). We also don't use cheap fillers like maltodextrin or hydrolysed vegetable proteins (high in MSG). Most jerky is surprisingly high in sugar (upwards of 25%!) but these bars have less sugar than a carrot. And because they're slow dried they're much more tender than jerky and retain over 90% of heat sensitive vitamins such as B12. Better is an understatement.

Better for you.

Low sugar and made from 100% organic grass-fed Aussie beef which is up to five times higher in healthy omega-3s. Slow dried rather than cooked means they're higher in heat sensitive vitamins like B12.

Nature's original protein.

Unlike traditional protein bars, our bars are minimally processed. They contain all essential amino acids and are much easier for your body to digest, which results in superior protein utilisation.

No nasty preservatives.

We reinvented an ancient drying process to naturally preserve our bars just as our ancestors did, with no added nasties like nitrates or nitrites. They'll last at least 6 months on the shelf without refrigeration.

Better for the planet.

Grass-fed beef is significantly better for the environment than grain-fed, particularly regeneratively farmed cattle which are a critical part of creating healthy soils and helping to reverse climate change.

Better for the animals.

Most beef comes from industrial feedlots where animals are kept in confined stalls and fattened with grains. We source our beef from family owned organic farms where cattle forage freely all year round.

Real food, fills you up.

Other snacks bars leave you craving more nutrition because they typically use artificial thickeners, fillers, sweeteners and sugar alcohols, or are too high in sugar. Our bars are made from real food that squashes your hunger.

I love Chief Bars. The meat is grass-fed, which keeps the fat profile extremely favourable to anti-inflammation. Beef is also the best sources of haem iron, great for energy, great for iron stores. The bars are high in protein, which is one of the most satiating macronutrients, so you feel fuller for longer. Even better, the bars have a kilojoule count that is perfect as a snack that can readily be consumed on a daily basis. When you eat a Chief Bar, feel confident that you are eating an extremely healthy and health-promoting snack.

Victoria Burdon, Trainer and Fitness Model

Chief Bar is my number one snack on the go, especially on days when I barely get any breaks between training myself and my clients. I also love having Chief with me at Tough Mudder, Spartan Race and other crazy fitness events that I often attend. These are mostly in remote locations where it’s impossible to get any healthy food. It is especially hard for me as I’m lactose and gluten intolerant, which means that most protein bars and protein powders are out of the picture. As a trainer and fitness model, I care about my health and fitness and I want to lead by example for my clients and all young girls and women out there.

I find Chief Bar to be the perfect race nutrition and aided my recent win at the Kokoda Ultra. They're easy to digest and delicious. Post race the lamb and beef are not only satisfying but promote fast recovery.

Todd Liubinskas, Fitness Director at Men’s Health

I’m so glad there’s finally a savoury snack that’s healthy! I travel all over Sydney every day and often struggle to make a time for a proper meal….but I’m constantly hungry! Working full time and training hard requires lots of fuel and I don’t always like eating sweet bars. Having a box of Chief in the car is an absolute saviour. It’s like having a Sunday roast handy all day every day. It’s also great to be able to recommend a product that actually meets my beliefs on macro- and micro- nutrient needs.

INGREDIENTS

Organic Grass-fed Beef (80%), amaranth flour, cranberries, coconut aminos, vinegar, salt, spices, lactic acid. Made in Australia from at least 80% Australian ingredients.

Spices include paprika, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper and nutmeg. If you're looking to avoid onion and garlic, please try our biltong.

ABOUT OUR BEEF

All our beef comes from family farms in and around Australia’s Lake Eyre Basin. For millions of years countless floods have deposited rich nutrients to create vast, fertile outback floodplains that are unsuitable for growing crops but perfect for beef.

Cattle follow their natural instincts to roam across millions of hectares of certified organic grasslands. With minimal human interaction, they forage freely all year round on seasonally changing native grasses, herbs and succulents. The beef is completely free from added chemicals, antibiotics, GMOs or added hormones.

FAQ

How are they different?

Our meat bars are a healthy, savoury snack made from 100% animal-based, whole protein. Other protein bars typically use either soy or whey protein isolates. These highly processed ingredients undergo toxic chemical treatments to create a protein source that is difficult for your body to recognise. Additionally, other bars often have to rely on sugar and/or sweeteners to balance the flavour of protein powders. This results in unavoidably and often unfavourably high levels of sugar/carbohydrate that is seen in nearly every other protein bar on the market. Chief Bars are minimally processed and contains all essential amino acids. They’re also much easier for your body to digest, which results in superior protein utilisation.

What do they taste like?

Everyone says they taste like a roast! They're dried like jerky or biltong, but because they're mixed with spices and a little dried fruit and are dried over days instead of hours, they're much more tender.

Is red meat good for you?

Yes! In recent years, there have been claims that red meat is unhealthy, scaring many people into giving up their much-loved steak in an attempt to be healthier. Little do they know, this might not be the healthiest choice, especially given that Iron deficiency is one of the most widespread nutritional disorders in the world.

Iron and vitamin B12 insufficiency are on the rise, particularly affecting young women. Yes, plant sources can contain Iron (even though the bio-availability and absorption are not as strong), however vitamin B12 can only be found in foods derived from animal sources. Both Iron and Vitamin B12 are essential for your health, playing an important role in both your energy levels and metabolism. Furthermore, red meat is a complete and high source of protein that is easy to digest and contains all of the essential amino acids that you need for good health and physical performance.

The World Health Organisation has stated that the consumption of PROCESSED meat contributes to colon cancer. Processed meat includes things like sausages, bacon and deli meats. They are not talking about a good quality steak, or Chief Bar made from top quality grass-fed meat with no nitrites or harmful chemicals.

Most studies were conducted using people who may not be particularly health conscious or savvy. As Westerners, we tend to overeat red meat, averaging about four times per day! The average consumer buys their meat in a supermarket, because it’s cheaper, not realising that the steak is usually grain fed thus containing more inflammatory Omega 6 fatty acids! In Western society, a popular way to consume meat is to char-grill it, usually with the help of harmful hydrogenated vegetable oils, then add a dollop of sugary sauce, a side of fries and a schooner of beer. In this scenario, it’s hard to tell whether cancer is caused by the meat consumption specifically or by excessive consumption of alcohol, hydrogenated oils, chemicals and additives, a sedentary lifestyle or a combination of all these factors.

The recommended serving of red meat is 80g – this is why Chief Bars are the size they are, we start with 80g of raw steak which is dried to create a 40g bar in an ideal portion. Restaurants will generally serve at least 250g, which is over 3x the recommended amount. Red meat is healthy when enjoyed in small amounts. Similar to dark chocolate, one square a day is healthy; a whole block a day is a ‘nutritional disaster’.

What type of meat do you use?

All our meat is 100% organic, grass-fed, grass-finished, added hormone free, antibiotic free and ethically raised. We source our beef from family owned organic farms in QLD, Australia where cattle forage freely all year round.

How long do they last for?

The bars will last on the shelf for at least 6 months without refrigeration. Refrigerate once opened and consume within 3 days.

Where are they made?

Our meat bars are made in Sydney, NSW Australia.

Who are they designed for?

Our meat bars are designed for those looking for a high quality protein source on the move, but they're also a brilliant post workout recovery snack and great for those who just want a guilt free, savoury snack.

Are they suitable for kids?

Our whole range is perfect for kids and a great way to get some high quality protein into their day. This new version of our meat bar is also nut free which makes them school friendly.

The packet is a bit puffy, is there something wrong?

The puffiness of these bars is due to us flushing out the oxygen in the wrapper with a harmless, inert gas mixture (basically Nitrogen which makes up 78% of the air we breath). Doing this means we don't need to include a small oxygen scavenger packet like we used to have (better for the environment), and it means we can keep the bars fresh for much longer without needing nasty preservatives.
